Origin & History of the Hugar Community
Rooted in centuries of craft, culture, and contribution to Karnataka's social fabric.
The Hugar Community — Weavers of Karnataka's Heritage
The Hugar community, also known as Hugar Lingayats, is an ancient artisan community of Karnataka with a proud heritage spanning over a thousand years. Traditionally master weavers and skilled craftsmen, Hugars have contributed immensely to Karnataka's textile tradition — producing handloom fabrics, silk textiles, and traditional garments that form the backbone of the state's cultural identity.
The community traces its roots across northern Karnataka, primarily in the districts of Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Belagavi, Koppal, and Bagalkot, with significant populations in Bengaluru Urban and Rural. The Hugar name itself derives from their traditional occupation — "Hugara" meaning those who engage in the art of weaving and textile production.
Samaj Formally Established
Community elders and welfare workers from across Karnataka came together to formally establish the Akhanda Karnataka Hugar Mahasabha Association (R.) — uniting all regional Hugar organisations under one registered body.
District Chapters Established
Active district-level chapters formed across 31 districts with elected local presidents, enabling grassroots welfare delivery, community dispute resolution, and scheme facilitation.
Scholarship Fund Launched
The Samaj launched its dedicated scholarship fund, providing merit-cum-means financial assistance to hundreds of students from Class 8 through professional degree programmes annually.
Government Collaboration Formalised
Under the leadership of Basavaraj Hugar, the Samaj secured formal recognition from the Karnataka Backward Classes Welfare Department and began coordinated implementation of state welfare programs.
Annual Hugar Mahotsava Instituted
The Samaj instituted the annual Akhanda Hugar Mahotsava — a state-level cultural gathering celebrating traditional weaving arts, community awards, and the legacy of Hugar forebears.
8 Lakh+ Strong — Growing Every Year

Masters of the Loom — Karnataka's Textile Tradition
For over a millennium, the Hugar community has been the custodian of Karnataka's handloom weaving tradition. Hugar weavers produce iconic fabrics — Dharwad cotton sarees, traditional dhotis, and decorative textiles — that are sold across India and exported internationally. This craft is not merely a livelihood; it is a living cultural heritage passed down through generations.
ಸಮಾನತೆ · Equality
Rooted in Basavanna's philosophy — every Hugar member is equal irrespective of economic status. The Samaj actively fights social discrimination and promotes inter-community dignity.
ದಾಸೋಹ · Selfless Service
The Dasoha tradition of giving — feeding, educating, and supporting those in need — is the core operating principle of every welfare activity the Samaj undertakes.
ಅಖಂಡತೆ · Unity
8 lakh members — one voice. The Samaj is the democratic political and social voice of the entire Hugar community, functioning as a unified bloc on all policy, cultural, and welfare matters.
ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ · Education First
Education is the Samaj's highest priority. Every rupee invested in a Hugar child's education is an investment in the community's future leadership and economic independence.
ಸಂವಿಧಾನ · Constitutional Rights
The Samaj operates strictly within constitutional frameworks — demanding what is rightfully owed to the community through legal, democratic, and policy channels.
ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ · Sustainable Progress
Balancing economic development with preservation of traditional crafts — the Samaj supports modern skill-building while ensuring Hugar weaving traditions are not lost to time.

"The Hugar community has woven the fabric of Karnataka's culture for centuries. Today, our duty is to weave together opportunities — in education, in health, in governance — so that every member of our Samaj can stand tall with pride and purpose. Akhanda Karnataka Hugar Mahasabha Association (R.) is not just an organisation; it is a constitutional commitment to every family we serve."
"Our forebears built this state with their hands — at the loom, on the farm, in the workshop. Now it is our responsibility to ensure that their grandchildren have access to universities, government offices, and the highest levels of public life. We will not stop until every Hugar family has a scholarship, a patta, a home, and a voice in the legislature."
