The Hugar Community — Weavers of Karnataka's Heritage
The Hugar community, also known as Hugar Lingayats, is an ancient artisan community of Karnataka with a proud heritage spanning over a thousand years. Traditionally master weavers and skilled craftsmen, Hugars have contributed immensely to Karnataka's textile tradition — producing handloom fabrics, silk textiles, and traditional garments that form the backbone of the state's cultural identity.
The community traces its roots across northern Karnataka, primarily in the districts of Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Belagavi, Koppal, and Bagalkot, with significant populations in Bengaluru Urban and Rural. The Hugar name itself derives from their traditional occupation — "Hugara" meaning those who engage in the art of weaving and textile production.
